Cloud of Witnesses

A cloud of witnesses surrounds us and cheer us on as we live out our faith each day. They are watching to see if we will be faithful witnesses to the saving grace and eternal truths that have brought life into our existence and are available to all those around us.

Characters: 1 Young Man, 3 Young Women, 1 Cloud of Witnesses, 1 cup of sugar?

Props & Setup: A line of chairs is all you’ll need.

The Skit: A group of people stand up on chairs that are place in a line on stage. They watch as a young man enters the room. They say, “Here he comes! Do you think he’s going to do it today? I don’t know, he’s pretty shy. Well, let’s cheer him on anyway. He might just get up the courage today.”

The young man stands directly in front of (or below) the cloud of witnesses. They watch him as he hangs out there for a few seconds. Maybe one of them fixes his hair while he’s waiting. He feels something brush his head, and looks around, but sees nothing.

Then a young woman enters the room and walks over to the young man. As they talk together the young man appears extremely nervous. It appears as if he wants to ask the young woman something very important, perhaps if she would go out with him, but we just don’t know.

The cloud of witnesses starts to get excited. They shout, “C’mon, you can do it! Go for it! Ask her! Just do it! You can do this, c’mon! Be a man! Go, go, go, go!” They call out and cheer him on as he talks to the girl, but finally she waves goodbye and leaves. The cloud of witnesses is dejected, “Oh man, he failed again. You could tell he wanted to ask her, but he couldn’t get up the courage.”

Just then another girl enters the room and walks over to the young man. The cloud of witness gets excited again and they hear him on as he talks to this new girl. But after awhile, she leaves too.

A third girl enters the room and walks up to the young man. The cloud of witnesses begins to cheer him on with all their might as he talks with the girl.

The cloud of witnesses quickly quiets down to watch and listen when the young man says, “Um, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you, but haven’t had the courage to do until now.”

The young woman asks, “What is it?”

He says, “Um, well…” As he hesitates, the cloud of witnesses goes berzerk. They shout, “C’mon, you can do it! You’re almost there, just ask her! You can do it!” They quiet down when he speaks again, “Well, I was wondering if…” He hesitates again, and the cloud of witnesses goes nuts again. They cry out and plead with him, cheering him on, and nearly falling off their chairs as they peer from above to see if he will finally get up the courage to ask her.

He says, “Well, okay, I can do this.”

She says, “It’s okay, just ask me.”

Finally he says, “I was wondering if you would like to come to church with me sometime. I go to a really cool youth group and I’ve been wanting to invite you for a long time. You see, I’m a Christian and I would really like to share my faith with you, but it’s not easy for me to talk about that stuff. Anyway, I finally got up the courage to ask you. So would you like to come?”

She smiles and says, “Sure, let go.”

As they walk out, the cloud of witnesses breaks into a wild uproar. They jump around and give each other high fives. They cheer, “Wow, awesome! He actually did it! That was amazing! I can’t believe it! He finally made it! That was so cool.” They exit talking about what just happened.

The end

Biblical Emphasis: Hebrews 12:1-2 The cloud of witnesses is cheering us on to run the race set before us, to live out our faith in real, concrete ways, and to share our faith with those who are in need of a Savior and Lord. Matthew 28:18-20 Let’s go out boldly and share our faith just as Jesus directed us to, and let’s not forget that he is with us every step of the way.

Discussion Starters:
1. Why is it difficult to share our faith with others?
2. Share a time when someone shared their faith with you.
3. Discuss ways to share your faith with others in casual, nonthreatening ways.
4. Name one way you will try to share your faith with others.
5. Pray for God’s help with that commitment.
